<p data-block-key="tmnuu">The application of a basic geographic information system (GIS) workflow and cloud-based processing of publicly available Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, within a Google Earth Engine environment, demonstrates the ability to track large maritime vessel activity patterns on the Taedong River proximal to Nampo Port in Nampo, Democratic People&#x27;s Republic of Korea (DPRK) with a high degree of accuracy. This maritime vessel activity was observed over a period of 10 years (2015-2025). The automated methodology utilized to analyze this activity has no statistically significant bias (95% CI -0.22 – 0.45) with a mean absolute error of 0.81 ships per image across the entire area of interest. Analysis identified multiple temporal points of interest where there were significant changes in maritime activity, providing quantitative context for further in-depth qualitative research. The automated methodology described can be replicated on other ports or narrow maritime areas of interest to generate contextual quantitative data on large vessel movements and activity over long time periods.</p>

<p data-block-key="p4v5h">Cities play a critical role in shaping the conditions that allow young children and families to thrive. City-level policy decisions shape many of the conditions essential to healthy early childhood development, including access to food, water, and nutrition; safe and stable housing; caregiver safety and well-being; family economic stability; and opportunities for play and learning. As cities pursue goals such as poverty reduction, affordability, and job creation, investments in young children and families have emerged as a strategic approach to achieving broader social and economic outcomes. </p><p data-block-key="8na4c">On February 10, the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings will convene city leaders and policy stakeholders for a conversation on how cities can design and implement policies to help young children and families thrive. Since 2019, CUE has worked with cities to support policies that benefit young children and families, initially through its <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/collection/learning-landscapes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Playful Learning Landscapes</a> initiative. This event will spotlight the experiences of Detroit and Addis Ababa, two cities that have taken significant steps to improve the lives of young children and their families through holistic investments spanning critical sectors. <p data-block-key="njr8n">Global economic power is shifting as liberal, market-oriented democracies confront rising domestic turmoil and a fraying global trade and financial system. Forces once seen as engines of shared prosperity have deepened inequality, fueled political backlash, and intensified economic nationalism. At the same time, institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization have struggled to adapt, while middle power countries like India, Brazil, and Indonesia face growing pressure to choose sides amid intensifying U.S.-China competition. These dynamics have locked economics, domestic politics, and geopolitics into a destabilizing feedback loop—a doom loop. </p><p data-block-key="bj1oj">On Wednesday, February 11, Brookings will host a panel discussion marking the launch of “<a href="https://www.brookings.edu/books/the-doom-loop/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Doom Loop: Why the World Economic Order is Spiraling into Disorder</a>.” In his new book, “The Doom Loop,” Brookings Senior Fellow Eswar Prasad traces how the global order reached this breaking point and outlines innovative pathways toward a more inclusive and resilient future. ‘The Doom Loop’ and the future of the global order

<p data-block-key="72w1r">The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is the federal agency responsible for regulating our networks and communications, including broadband, infrastructure, space, and media. In January 2025, Olivia Trusty was nominated by President Donald J. Trump to serve as FCC commissioner. After being confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Commissioner Trusty began her term in June 2025.
