Cities play a critical role in shaping the conditions that allow young children and families to thrive. City-level policy decisions shape many of the conditions essential to healthy early childhood development, including access to food, water, and nutrition; safe and stable housing; caregiver safety and well-being; family economic stability; and opportunities for play and learning. As cities pursue goals such as poverty reduction, affordability, and job creation, investments in young children and families have emerged as a strategic approach to achieving broader social and economic outcomes. On February 10, the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings will convene city leaders and policy stakeholders for a conversation on how cities can design and implement policies to help young children and families thrive. Since 2019, CUE has worked with cities to support policies that benefit young children and families, initially through its <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/collection/learning-landscapes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Playful Learning Landscapes</a> initiative. This event will spotlight the experiences of Detroit and Addis Ababa, two cities that have taken significant steps to improve the lives of young children and their families through holistic investments spanning critical sectors. Through a moderated discussion with city leaders, the audience will leave with practical takeaways on building political and community support for policies and their implementation, identifying creative ways to finance investments, and coordinating across sectors to deliver results. Online viewers can submit questions via e-mail to events@brookings.edu.

Global economic power is shifting as liberal, market-oriented democracies confront rising domestic turmoil and a fraying global trade and financial system. Forces once seen as engines of shared prosperity have deepened inequality, fueled political backlash, and intensified economic nationalism. At the same time, institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization have struggled to adapt, while middle power countries like India, Brazil, and Indonesia face growing pressure to choose sides amid intensifying U.S.-China competition. These dynamics have locked economics, domestic politics, and geopolitics into a destabilizing feedback loop—a doom loop. On Wednesday, February 11, Brookings will host a panel discussion marking the launch of “<a href="https://www.brookings.edu/books/the-doom-loop/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Doom Loop: Why the World Economic Order is Spiraling into Disorder</a>.” In his new book, “The Doom Loop,” Brookings Senior Fellow Eswar Prasad traces how the global order reached this breaking point and outlines innovative pathways toward a more inclusive and resilient future. ‘The Doom Loop’ and the future of the global order

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is the federal agency responsible for regulating our networks and communications, including broadband, infrastructure, space, and media. In January 2025, Olivia Trusty was nominated by President Donald J. Trump to serve as FCC commissioner. After being confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Commissioner Trusty began her term in June 2025. Alongside her peers, Commissioner Trusty will be instrumental in advancing the resiliency of existing and future networks, the future of media, and efforts that ensure communications accessibility to all Americans, especially as Congress begins to engage in universal service reform.On February 4, the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings will host a fireside chat with FCC Commissioner Trusty to discuss her outlook on the agency in 2026, the priorities of the agency, and the aspirations for communications policies under her leadership.This event will be open to attend in person or watch online.
